Health Care Costs

Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway, and JPMorgan are creating a new healthcare company to tackle the 'hungry tapeworm' of rising costs

Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway, and JPMorgan Chase are creating a new business designed to lower healthcare costs for US-based employees in a move that could shake up the managed-care industry.

The companies were not specific about what kind of enterprise they aim to create, noting only that they wanted to improve employee satisfaction while reducing costs, according to a joint release. Still, the news was enough to send shares of managed-care providers lower. [...]

Berkshire Hathaway Utility Unit Shuffles Top Executives

Berkshire Hathaway is shuffling the executives in charge of its utility unit after promoting Greg Abel to oversee all of Berkshire's non-insurance businesses.

Abel's promotion to vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway was announced Wednesday. Following that move, Berkshire promoted MidAmerican Energy CEO William Fehrman to replace Abel at Berkshire Hathaway Energy. [...]

Berkshire Hathaway Energy includes MidAmerican, PacifiCorp, NV Energy and several other utilities.

With Fehrman moving up to oversee Berkshire Hathaway Energy, Des Moines, Iowa-based MidAmerican promoted Adam Wright to be its new CEO. [...]

Ajit Jain Reports $109 Million Stake in Berkshire Hathaway

One of Warren Buffett’s top deputies has amassed a stake in Berkshire Hathaway Inc. valued at more than $100 million.

Ajit Jain, the insurance executive who was named a vice chairman of Buffett’s conglomerate earlier this month, disclosed the holdings in a regulatory filing on Thursday. A large portion of the stake is held by a foundation and trusts in his family’s name, and his wife also owns some of the shares. Jain directly controls about $22 million of the stock. [...]

Potential Buffett Heir Reveals What May Be Just the Start of His Berkshire Stake

[...] A regulatory filing on Friday shows Abel indirectly holds about $2.1 million of stock in the Omaha, Nebraska-based company. But a separate disclosure last year noted an agreement that could catapult his holdings higher. That filing showed he could convert a stake in Berkshire’s energy business into more than $400 million of stock in the conglomerate.

The new filing was triggered by his promotion last week to vice chairman for non-insurance operations at Berkshire, a position that will put him in charge of businesses ranging from BNSF Railway to Dairy Queen. [...]

Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway had an amazing 2017. 2018 isn’t looking too bad, either.

[...] The Jain and Abel ascension followed a momentous 2017 for Berkshire Hathaway that saw the company’s “A” shares break $300,000 per share. It closed at $320,000 on Thursday, but you can still buy the Berkshire “baby B” shares for $213.

Also last year, Berkshire’s cash-on-hand surpassed $100 billion as Buffett/Munger scurried to find new investments. The Republican tax plan that became law late last month gifted a one-time, $37 billion windfall to Berkshire shareholders, which helped raise the stock price.

Not least of all, Buffett won a $1 million, decade-old bet with a hedge-fund bigwig. Buffett said he could do better than a portfolio of hedge funds by investing in boring, index fund over 10 years. Buffett gave the money to Girls Inc., one of his favorite charities.

So where does Berkshire Hathaway go from here? [...]

Iscar Wants to Expand Galilee Factory, but It Can’t Find Workers

Iscar, the Israeli maker of machine tools owned by U.S. billionaire investor Warren Buffett, wanted to build an additional plant at its headquarters in the Galilee town of Tefen. Eli Cohen, the minister of economy and industry, was there to help with an offer of a 50-dunam (12.5-acre) site at no cost.

Cohen wanted to ensure that as Iscar grows, it grows in Israel, rather than just overseas. But it doesn’t look like the plant will be built after all, and that’s because there aren’t enough skilled workers to hire, sources close to the company told TheMarker. [...]

New headquaters, expanding workforce at Guard

Berkshire Hathaway Guard Insurance, having moved its headquarters to downtown Wilkes-Barre’s Public Square, is now in the process of filling about 170 jobs it says have been made possible by the move.

The project, which began late last year, is well underway with many departments having moved to the building at 39 Public Square, which Westguard Insurance Co. purchased for just over $5 million in November, according to Guard officials. [...]

GUARD’s annual sales have grown sixfold to approximately $1.2 billion since 2007, and the insurer had run out of space for its more than 675 employees, most of them working in five different spots in the downtown.

Wilkes-Barre, wanting to retain the company, facilitated a $1 million Local Share Account grant to help the project. The state added another $855,000 grant. [...]

Your Next Running Shoes Will Be Custom-Built for You

[...] biomechanical assessment, part of a service and philosophy that Brooks calls Run Signature, has long been in use by the company to help guide its customers to the best-fitting shoe in its arsenal. But the options so far have been limited to what Brooks can sell off the shelf.

Now Brooks, the top brand in specialty running with 25% of the shoe market, according to the NPD Group, wants to take that a step further. The company is working with tech stalwart HP to marry a runner’s gait information with a three-dimensional foot scan generated by HP’s new FitStation device. HP’s technology can measure pressure along the foot as it lands in each stride. The data help Brooks determine how much polyurethane to inject in a shoe’s sole to achieve the right density for as many as 30 zones of your foot.

At a time when Adidas, Nike, and other sportswear companies limit footwear customization to color and material, Berkshire Hathaway–owned Brooks seeks to create running shoes with customized performance elements as well as build data-rich digital customer profiles. [...]

For the latest quarter, Brooks reported double-digit revenue growth, boosted by sales of the company's shoes for avid runners, including Brooks' Ghost and Adrenaline footwear models.

Brooks' third-quarter sales climbed 11 percent, while global footwear revenue was up 14 percent during the period, the company reported Monday. The retailer is also gaining traction in the "$100 and above" segment for adult running footwear, NPD data show. [...]

A Georgia carpet-maker plans to put $42 million into its existing plant in Decatur, Tennessee, creating 75 jobs, company and state officials announced Friday.

Stuart plant closing due to declining sales, Shaw officials say

There aren't as many people buying hardwood flooring right now. That fact was part of the reason Shaw Industries decided to close their plant in Stuart, company officials said Friday. [...]

Farris said despite the downturn in sales, the company is not getting out of the hardwood business. It will continue to operate the three other solid hardwood manufacturing facilities it owns in other states. The decision to close the Stuart plant, however, means that 160 employees are out of work. Farris said that each of them will be given an offer to work in one of the company's other facilities. The Stuart plant is the only one that operated in southern Virginia, so that would require relocating if the offers are accepted. Farris said that a final closing date hasn't been set for the Stuart plant. It will continue to operate through December or at the latest, early January of 2018. Shaw bought the factory in 2010, before being itself bought out by Berkshire Hathaway. [...]

Iowa wind turbines power all of utility's customers for 2 days

MidAmerican Energy officials said winds blew hard enough on Monday and Tuesday for wind turbines to provide all of the power needed to meet its customers’ needs for the state.

MidAmerican spokeswoman Tina Hoffman said the utility’s experts noted the wind was strong enough to produce the energy needed to power 670,000 electric customers in the state.

MidAmerican’s goal is to eventually produce 100 percent of its power with renewable resources. The company is upgrading its old wind turbines and building new ones to help reach that goal. MidAmerican is owned by Omaha-based Berkshire Hathaway.

CEO of NV Energy highlights great role of geothermal for State of Nevada

In a passionate interview, Paul Caudill, the CEO of NV Energy, Nevada’s largest utility owned by Berkshire Hathaway Energy, talks about his company’s stand and commitment on renewable energy in the state of Nevada. [...]

"I see a brighter future for geothermal energy than we have for the last five, six years here. In the early days — go back 30 years — some of our longest power purchase agreements were with geothermal plants. It was a resource that was number one in those days because of the cost of solar and the fact that wind is not a great resource here. Geothermal was the place to go if you wanted renewable energy here. And then what happened is solar costs came down." [...]

"But as you go to higher penetrations of renewable energy displacing thermal plants, geothermal has a significant value. And that is you can dispatch it. 24/7. We can use geothermal plants at night when we can’t use a solar facility. I think there is a significant value there. And as you start pushing to increase [solar] penetration on the grid, geothermal is going to become more valued." [...]

Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway reveals stake in Monsanto

On Monday he ate through one Apple. But he was still hungry!

For longtime Buffett watchers, these new investments are not so much of a shock as they might appear to more casual observers. Because what Buffett loves more than anything in the world is paying a fair price for a business with huge barriers to entry. In the parlance of stockpickers, we call these moats (as in the defensive ring of water that surrounded the medieval castles of yore). A good moat means sustainable profit margins and a defensible business model that allows for an investment holding period of (hopefully) forever. [...]
Berkshire Hathaway jumps into wearables with a smart jewelry line
This spring, the jewelry manufacturer and distributor is launching a smart jewelry line called Ela. Starting with wristwear, Ela is the Richline Group's first foray into wearables, which should eventually extend into multiple product categories like rings and earrings.

Using Bluetooth Low Energy, Ela connects to both iOS and Android devices. It has a step-tracking feature that syncs with Apple Health and Google Health Kit. However, the company was interested in producing something better than just a "prettier step tracker," Cliff Ulrich, product innovation manager for the Richline Group, explained to ZDNet. The wearable also connects to the Ela app, through which you can create and share photos and other "memories" like special songs or a voice recording. The memories can be pre-loaded when giving it as a gift to someone else. A user can also create alerts -- the gem on the device will softly glow and vibrate when someone on your alert list is trying to contact you. Users can set the device to glow a certain color for specific contacts or groups. [...]

(Note this news article from last summer: Buffett’s Richline Acquires Wearables Maker Viawear (6/7/16))

Warren Buffett explains why he's investing in a risky tech sector: wearables

"Jewelry is a centuries-old business that isn't going anywhere, so it's a safe bet," [Buffett] told CNBC in an emailed statement. "With the addition of technology, we're simply updating something everyone knows and loves to better fit our modern age."

Richline Group product and innovation manager Cliff Ulrich explained, "We've designed Ela to be jewelry first. As a jewelry company, we understand jewelry retailers and consumers, what they want to carry and buy. They want to create an emotional connection, whether your giving Ela as a gift or buying it for yourself because you just got a bonus. Ela allows you to save memories in your jewelry, like a modern day locket." [...]

Warren Buffett – How Charlie Convinced Me To Break My Cigar-Butt Investing Habit

My cigar-butt strategy worked very well while I was managing small sums. Indeed, the many dozens of free puffs I obtained in the 1950s made that decade by far the best of my life for both relative and absolute investment performance. [...]

But a major weakness in this approach gradually became apparent: Cigar-butt investing was scalable only to a point. With large sums, it would never work well.

In addition, though marginal businesses purchased at cheap prices may be attractive as short-term investments, they are the wrong foundation on which to build a large and enduring enterprise. [...]

It took Charlie Munger to break my cigar-butt habits and set the course for building a business that could combine huge size with satisfactory profits. [...]

BNSF budgets $3.4 billion for 2017 capex plan

BNSF Railway Co. unveiled a $3.4 billion capital expenditure plan for 2017, the Class I announced yesterday. Similar to last year's $3.9 billion plan, the largest component of this year's program will be to replace and maintain the railroad's core network and related assets. That aspect of this year's work will amount to about $2.4 billion, BNSF officials said in a press release. [...] In addition, BNSF expects to spend $400 million on expansion projects; $100 million on positive train control implementation; and $400 million on locomotives, freight cars and other equipment acquisitions.[...]

Kansas logistics park offers big intermodal-growth potential for BNSF

BNSF Railway Co. has tried to accelerate ID efforts in recent years to gain as big a business boost as possible, especially of the intermodal variety. From 2011 through 2015, the Class I each year landed more than $1 billion worth of new or expanded facilities along its lines, including $1.2 billion in 2015 and nearly $1.5 billion in 2014. And as of late last month, BNSF was on pace to surpass the $1 billion mark for the sixth-straight year, with about 100 ID projects on the 2016 docket, including several at a fast-growing, footprint-swelling logistics park in Kansas. [...]

J.B. Hunt, BNSF will review revenue split

[...] Last year, about $3.7 billion -- 60 percent of J.B. Hunt's revenue -- came from its intermodal segment. Michael Haverty, who was the president of Santa Fe Railway when he approached J.B. Hunt with the original intermodal deal in 1989, has estimated that BNSF makes about $1 billion annually from the deal. Santa Fe Railway Corp. and Burlington Northern Inc. merged to form BNSF in 1993.

The "evergreen" intermodal contract automatically renews each year. The agreement stipulates that the revenue division will be negotiated by the two companies and is reviewed quarterly. J.B. Hunt is questioning the period beginning May 1, 2016. [...]

AIG to pay Buffett's Berkshire about $10 billion in insurance deal

American International Group Inc (AIG.N) has agreed to pay roughly $10.2 billion to Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc (BRKa.N) to take on many long-term risks on U.S. commercial insurance policies it has already written.

The reinsurance transaction covers "long-tail" exposures, which are liabilities that emerge long after policies are issued, from excess casualty, workers compensation and other AIG policies issued before last year.

Berkshire's National Indemnity Co unit, led by Buffett's reinsurance chief Ajit Jain, will take on 80 percent of net losses in excess of the first $25 billion, with a maximum liability of $20 billion. [...]

Here's How Warren Buffett Could Lose a Major Cash Cow as Dow Chemical Rallies (Fortune)
[Berkshire Hathaway] has been collecting roughly $225 million a year (or $8 a second) in interest from his Dow Chemical stake since 2009. That year, Buffett provided Dow with $3 billion to help finance its purchase of chemical maker Rohm and Haas. As part of the agreement, the industrials giant gave the investor preferred stock and slapped on a hefty 8.5% annual payment on top of it.

But the contract came with a back door for Dow. Starting in April 2014, should shares of Dow Chemical close above $53.72 for 20 days in any consecutive 30-day trading period, Dow can convert Buffett’s preferred shares into common stock—canceling the Oracle’s $8-a-second payout. Each of Dow’s common shares pay a mere 3.4% annual regular dividend, so it’s of little surprise that Dow Chemical has indicated that it fully intends to convert Buffett’s stake should the conditions be met. Berkshire’s Jain Tells Gen Re Staff to Fix ‘Problem’ With Costs (Bloomberg)

Ajit Jain, one of Warren Buffett’s top managers at Berkshire Hathaway Inc., has a message for the staff that he oversees at Gen Re: It’s time for their business to get much leaner and less bureaucratic.

After taking charge of the reinsurer this year and installing a longtime deputy to lead the operation, Jain sent a memo to employees detailing five areas, including compensation and sales channels, where changes should be made. He also called for increasing business unit autonomy, accepting modifications on the terms of some risk-transfer deals and reducing complexity. [...]

Berkshire Hathaway, Transformed (Bloomberg)

Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway took its first step toward becoming a conglomerate back in 1967 by stepping from textiles into insurance, which would become its lifeblood. Nearly fifty years later, it's evolved again.

The $358 billion company's steady foray into energy, railways and manufacturing (among other sectors) has radically changed its earnings profile over the past decade. As a result, once-core insurance divisions such as Geico have become a much smaller part of the overall business. In fact, Berkshire's insurance arm is expected to contribute just 25 percent of its total 2016 pre-tax operating earnings, less than half the 57 percent that it accounted for in 2006. [...]

Brooks is now the market leader in the U.S. specialty running shoe market with a 29 percent share. It had total sales in 2014 of US$548 million, still only a fraction of overall leader Nike's sales of US$32 billion in the year to May 31. [...]

3 Wall Street pros reveal why it's so hard to cover Berkshire Hathaway (Yahoo)

“The key risk is — in my view — the fact that relatively few of its investors have a good understanding of what Berkshire actually does...the reporting is very sparse, and while it's probably ludicrous to question Warren Buffett's investing acumen, I think investors are much more likely to assume the best when there are questions of, say, earnings quality. Warren Buffett’s Risky Final Bet (Harvard Business Review)

For many years, investors have speculated on what will happen to Berkshire when Buffett dies – but they tend to focus on who will succeed him as CEO, and what will happen to the stock price. Buffett insists the company has a solid succession plan in place; at last year’s annual shareholder meeting, he announced that after his death, his son, Howard Buffett, will become the unpaid non-Executive Chair of the Board to ensure the continuation of Berkshire’s unique culture.

Will Howard Buffett be able to fulfill the role of the values champion who defends his father’s legacy in the face of challenges to Berkshire’s strategy and values? We suspect not – not because of any shortcomings, but because he will not have the shares to back him up.

Here the experience of Hewlett-Packard (HP) offers a cautionary tale. [...]

In contrast to the green revolution, the brown revolution is a tortoise-like approach: Its impact is gradual. Over the past decade, patiently, the Howard G. Buffett Foundation has spent hundreds of millions of dollars to identify and promote practical, low-cost methods of conservation farming—cover crops, no-till farming, locally bred seed varieties—that improve African soil quality and crop yields without chemical fertilizers and costly imported seeds. Renewable Energy In U.S. Heartland: How States Make It Work (Clean Technica)

Traditional investor-owned electric utilities rely on a guaranteed return on equity set by electricity regulators. Utilities typically earn this return by investing in generation systems such as coal and gas power plants or solar and wind farms (assets) and selling electricity to recover their investment, plus a return. In Iowa, MidAmerican has gone beyond this model to lower retail costs by selling their excess wind power to the local regional transmission organization. This let them increase the total amount of wind power on the grid and balance overall power generation. This has been so effective that MidAmerican plans to invest another $900 million in wind energy in Iowa, bringing the company’s total wind investment to $6.7 billion. The western Energy Imbalance Market, in turn, may let other Berkshire Hathaway Energy subsidiaries replicate this success. [...]

Buffett: Tesla doesn't threaten me (CNBC)

Warren Buffett and Larry Van Tuyl appeared on CNBC this week, with lots to say about the auto business. Buffett went on to talk about a number of other topics (Kraft, the Euro, Iran, interest rates, etc.), far more than I could squeeze into this excerpt.

Warren Buffett's new auto dealership business isn't under any threat from Elon Musk or his Tesla distribution model, the billionaire said Tuesday. [...] Buffett said he did not anticipate much of a threat from the electric car company's direct-to-consumer model because of Tesla's relatively small market. [...] Buffett also dismissed the notion of an near-term takeover of self-driving cars, saying "I think it's a long way off and I don't think everybody will adopt it." The billionaire said that he would bet there is less than a 10 percent penetration rate for self-driving cars by 2030. He did admit, however, that "if it's a safer way of driving, it's good for society and it's bad for our insurance business." Buffett also revealed Tuesday that he has big plans for his newly acquired unit, and that it is already on the prowl for new deals. "I'd be very surprised if five years from now we aren't a whole lot bigger," he said.

Van Tuyl went on to list what he is looking for in future acquisitions: “We look for throughput and volume, high-volume dealerships that are reasonably priced and owned by somebody who wants to put it in good hands.” The company wants to buy the real estate, too, where available, he added.

The mobile-home trap: How a Warren Buffett empire preys on the poor (Seattle Times)

Buffett’s mobile-home empire promises low-income Americans the dream of homeownership. But Clayton relies on predatory sales practices, exorbitant fees, and interest rates that can exceed 15 percent, trapping many buyers in loans they can’t afford and in homes that are almost impossible to sell or refinance, an investigation by The Seattle Times and Center for Public Integrity has found.

BNSF Slows Oil Trains Up to 30% to Boost Safety After Accidents (Bloomberg)

BNSF Railway Co. is cutting the speed of oil-carrying trains in some urban areas to as slow as 35 miles per hour, a 30 percent reduction, to improve safety following crude-by-rail accidents this month. BNSF, owned by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc., implemented the slower train speeds and measures to inspect tracks and rail cars more closely on March 25, Mike Trevino, a spokesman, said on Monday. The reduction trims the speed from the 40 mph (64 kilometers per hour) in high-risk areas that railroads, including BNSF, last year voluntarily installed in 46 urban areas. POSCO shares fell sharply on Wednesday following media reports that Berkshire Hathaway Inc., led by U.S. billionaire investor Warren Buffet, has sold its entire stake in the steelmaking giant, raising speculation that the sell-off might have been prompted by concerns over the South Korean steelmaker's cloudy business outlook. [...] The drop comes after Maeil Business Newspaper and other local media reports showed that Berkshire Hathaway unloaded 4.5 percent, or nearly 4 million shares, of POSCO during the second quarter of last year, citing an analysis by a global financial information provider.

Kraft Deal Boosts Buffett (Barrons)

The merger deal announced last week between Kraft Foods Group and H.J. Heinz is a good deal for Kraft shareholders, who will get a nice premium, but it’s a far better one for 3G Capital and Berkshire Hathaway, which took Heinz private nearly two years ago in a leveraged buyout. [...] By our calculation, 3G and Berkshire have more than tripled their original $8.5 billion equity investment in Heinz in less than two years, which amounts to a private-equity type score on a deal that originally looked like it was fully priced. Heinz was taken private at about 20 times forward earnings. We estimate that Berkshire and 3G are each sitting on more than $10 billion in profits from their investments in Heinz.
Regulator accuses Iowa governor of appeasing MidAmerican (Lincoln Journal Star / AP)
An outgoing member of the Iowa Utilities Board bluntly told Gov. Terry Branstad in a letter that his decision to remove her is improper and is being done to placate a powerful energy subsidiary of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway. Sheila Tipton told the governor in the March 18 letter that his move to replace her and demote board chair Elizabeth Jacobs is an inappropriate attempt to influence future decisions to favor utilities and "appease MidAmerican Energy." The company had complained about a ruling requiring the company to use some proceeds from a $280 million wind energy investment to reduce customers' rates.
Warren Buffett sees no weakness in economy, but too many 'are left behind' (Omaha World Herald)
Investor Warren Buffett says the economy continues to grow steadily, but too many people continue to miss out on the American dream. Buffett told CNN Thursday that he doesn't see any real sign of weakness in the economy. Buffett looks at reports from the more than 80 businesses his Berkshire Hathaway conglomerate owns for insight. But Buffett reiterated his concerns about income inequality in this country while the super-rich continue to thrive. He said that America should be able to do more to help people who are struggling do better.
