Brooks Running sees double-digit sales growth despite unpredictability of sports retail
For the latest quarter, Brooks reported double-digit revenue growth, boosted by sales of the company's shoes for avid runners, including Brooks' Ghost and Adrenaline footwear models.

Brooks' third-quarter sales climbed 11 percent, while global footwear revenue was up 14 percent during the period, the company reported Monday. The retailer is also gaining traction in the "$100 and above" segment for adult running footwear, NPD data show. [...]

Brooks Running CEO Reveals the Secrets to Winning In the Digital Retail World

(VIDEO) Considering the competition from Nike, Under Armour and Adidas the results aren't too shabby. Brooks Running CEO James Weber said the brand is winning with running enthusiasts. It also doesn't hurt to be under the Berkshire umbrella, Weber said, as he and his team could think longer term.

Shaw Industries creating 75 jobs in Decatur

A Georgia carpet-maker plans to put $42 million into its existing plant in Decatur, Tennessee, creating 75 jobs, company and state officials announced Friday.

Shaw Industries Group Inc., a Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary based in Dalton, Georgia, makes synthetic yarn at the Decatur factory for use at its other carpet plants. It plans to expand, using both nylon and polyester fiber in its product, according to a news release from the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development. [...]

Stuart plant closing due to declining sales, Shaw officials say

There aren't as many people buying hardwood flooring right now. That fact was part of the reason Shaw Industries decided to close their plant in Stuart, company officials said Friday. [...]

Farris said despite the downturn in sales, the company is not getting out of the hardwood business. It will continue to operate the three other solid hardwood manufacturing facilities it owns in other states. The decision to close the Stuart plant, however, means that 160 employees are out of work. Farris said that each of them will be given an offer to work in one of the company's other facilities. The Stuart plant is the only one that operated in southern Virginia, so that would require relocating if the offers are accepted. Farris said that a final closing date hasn't been set for the Stuart plant. It will continue to operate through December or at the latest, early January of 2018. Shaw bought the factory in 2010, before being itself bought out by Berkshire Hathaway. [...]

Iowa wind turbines power all of utility's customers for 2 days

MidAmerican Energy officials said winds blew hard enough on Monday and Tuesday for wind turbines to provide all of the power needed to meet its customers’ needs for the state.

MidAmerican spokeswoman Tina Hoffman said the utility’s experts noted the wind was strong enough to produce the energy needed to power 670,000 electric customers in the state.

MidAmerican’s goal is to eventually produce 100 percent of its power with renewable resources. The company is upgrading its old wind turbines and building new ones to help reach that goal. MidAmerican is owned by Omaha-based Berkshire Hathaway.

CEO of NV Energy highlights great role of geothermal for State of Nevada

In a passionate interview, Paul Caudill, the CEO of NV Energy, Nevada’s largest utility owned by Berkshire Hathaway Energy, talks about his company’s stand and commitment on renewable energy in the state of Nevada. [...]

"I see a brighter future for geothermal energy than we have for the last five, six years here. In the early days — go back 30 years — some of our longest power purchase agreements were with geothermal plants. It was a resource that was number one in those days because of the cost of solar and the fact that wind is not a great resource here. Geothermal was the place to go if you wanted renewable energy here. And then what happened is solar costs came down." [...]

"But as you go to higher penetrations of renewable energy displacing thermal plants, geothermal has a significant value. And that is you can dispatch it. 24/7. We can use geothermal plants at night when we can’t use a solar facility. I think there is a significant value there. And as you start pushing to increase [solar] penetration on the grid, geothermal is going to become more valued." [...]

It’s already added about 114 of the 285 new hires to be filled by August 2019. [...]

Berkshire Hathaway's 3rd Quarter Earnings release: PDF

Hurricanes Drag Down Berkshire's Quarterly Earnings

Bad weather weighed on results at Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc, as losses from insurance claims tied to Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria and an earthquake in Mexico contributed to a 43 percent drop in third-quarter profit.

Berkshire on Friday said net income fell to $4.07 billion, or $2,473 per Class A share, from $7.2 billion, or $4,379 per share, a year earlier.

Operating profit, which excludes investment and derivative gains and losses and which Buffett says better reflects company performance, fell 29 percent to $3.44 billion, or $2,094 per Class A share, from $4.85 billion, or $2,951 per share.

Berkshire said it incurred $1.95 billion of after-tax underwriting losses attributable to the hurricanes and earthquake. [...]

Berkshire Hathaway’s Third-Quarter Operating Profit Falls 29%

Berkshire Hathaway's (NYSE:BRK-A)(NYSE:BRK-B) third-quarter operating earnings declined to $3.44 billion, down from $4.85 billion in the year-ago period, due primarily to large insurance underwriting losses from natural disasters. Third-quarter weather events were particularly troublesome for Berkshire Hathaway Reinsurance, which posted a massive $1.3 billion pre-tax underwriting loss in the third quarter.[...]
  • Insurance -- $395 million net loss
  • Manufacturing, service, and retailing -- $1.7 billion profit
  • BNSF railroad hauls it in -- $1 billion profit
  • Utilities and energy -- $963 million profit
  • Finance and financial products -- $341 million profit
  • Berkshire cash pile -- $109 billion

Under the Hood of Berkshire Hathaway’s Pilot/Flying J

Pilot was founded in 1958 when Jim Haslam purchased a single gas station for $6,000. It dramatically increased in size when it purchased competitor Flying J out of bankruptcy. Because the bankruptcy proceedings are public, there’s valuable information within the filings made at the time, 2009. A value of $3.3 billion was placed on Pilot and Flying J was to be acquired for $300 million – $500 million in cash plus equity in the new company, valuing it in total at $1.8 billion. Post-merger, the combined entity had revenue in excess of $30 billion and would reasonably have an enterprise value of about $5.1 billion. [...]

The segment of the North American gas station industry has three main competitors: Pilot/Flying J, Love’s, and TravelCenters of America. Pilot/Flying J is the largest with $20 billion in revenue and 750 locations, while family-owned Love’s is not far behind at 430 locations and $16 billion in revenue. Travel Centers of America is the only one of the three that’s publicly traded and has 250 locations and $6 billion in annual revenue. [...]

That still leaves the question of how much Pilot is earning and what it’s worth. Margins are slim in this business – operating income is probably no more than 2% of sales, or maybe $500 million a year in total. Using a multiple of 12x operating income (a discount of about a third to the higher margin consumer gas stations of Couche-Tard and Casey’s) gives an enterprise value of $6 billion. That is roughly consistent with the value placed on the company in the Flying J bankruptcy filings in 2009. Subtracting $2.5 billion in estimated remaining debt would value the equity at about $3.5 billion. [...]

PacifiCorp facing regulatory blowback on wind power plans

Staff advisers at Oregon's utility regulator threw cold water on PacifiCorp's plan to spend $3.5 billion, one of its biggest upgrades ever, on wind turbines and a new transmission line.

The Public Utility Commission staff say the utility had failed to justify the need for the massive capital investments, whether to meet its capacity, energy or reliability needs. [...]

"There is no need for the proposed resources at all," said the staff recommendation. "PacifiCorp's existing resources are able to meet its resource needs."

That's not a universally held opinion. Some environmentalists support the wind investments, if not the transmission. And PacifiCorp insists it needs it all. But if commissioners agree with its advisory staff, it would be a big setback for the company. [...]

Carpet maker Shaw acquires Chattanooga-based digital sample provider

Shaw Industries, the country's biggest carpet maker, is buying a Tennessee-based producer of digital carpet samples and design tools.

Shaw, a subsidiary of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway, acquired Tricycle Inc. for an undisclosed sum.

Tricycle was founded in Chattanooga in 2002 and works with commercial manufacturers, interior designers and architects to visualize carpet designs and colors digitally. The company says its three-dimensional, color corrected digital images reduce waste by removing the need to produce physical samples. [...]

Warren Buffett – Mistakes of the First Twenty-Five Years

One of the best resources available to investors are the Berkshire Hathaway shareholder letters. One of my personal favorites is the 1989 letter in which Warren Buffett wrote a piece called – Mistakes of the First Twenty-five Years (A Condensed Version). It’s a great insight into how even the greatest investors can make mistakes. The lesson of course is not to make the same mistake twice. But it seems even Buffett did make the same mistake over and over in buying some of his cigar-butt companies simply because they were cheap. This of course changing when he met Charlie Munger and he coined the phrase, “It’s far better to buy a wonderful company at a fair price than a fair company at a wonderful price.”

Let’s take a look at some of the mistakes that Buffett highlighted from his first 25 years of investing [...]

In Rare Interview, Ted Weschler Says He Likes Apple’s “Subscription Element“

In the first detailed explanation of Berkshire’s investment thesis for Apple, Weschler says that the smartphone business had been transformed by the app economy and cloud computing. "As network speed has gotten faster and faster, and with it the information that people can absorb on the network, things like photo applications, and apps, they create a stickier ecosystem". Statistics showed that there was a high likelihood iPhone or iPad buyers would also purchase their next device from Apple, he added: "Once you are fully invested in the App ecosystem and you have got your thousands of photographs up in the cloud and you are used to the keystrokes and functionality and where everything is, you become a sticky consumer." Cash at Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway hits new record with stock market near highs

Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway closed the third quarter with $84.8 billion in cash, a gain of some $13 billion during the course of 2016.

Buffett over the years has not been shy about using the cash spit off from his vast array of holdings to buy companies, such as his most recent acquiree, Precision Castparts. Even excluding the $20 billion he has said he likes to keep as a cushion, Buffett has plenty of firepower to deploy. [...]

Warren Buffett’s business buys KC area’s largest home builder

Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. has bought the assets of the Kansas City area’s largest home builder, Summit Custom Homes, the companies announced.

The deal involved Berkshire’s Tennessee-based Clayton Properties. It has been buying other home builders, beginning its own operations with the purchase of an Atlanta business last fall. Clayton has sold 500 homes in its first year.

Clayton Properties bought the operating assets of Summit Custom Homes, which is based in Lee’s Summit. The announcement, which did not disclose terms of the sale, said it included about 1,200 lots in the Kansas City area. [...]

Purchase gives Shaw Industries huge share of wood-plastic composite market

Shaw Industries Group Inc., the world's biggest carpet maker, is taking a harder approach to floorcovering with the purchase of the leading producer of the increasingly popular wood-plastic composite flooring.

The Dalton, Ga.-based Shaw announced Tuesday it has reached a definitive agreement to purchase USFloors, also based in Dalton, for an undisclosed amount. Started in 2001 by Piet Dossche — the brother-in-law of Beaulieu of America co-founder Carl Bouckart — USFloors helped develop the waterproof, wood-like vinyl flooring, as well as cork, bamboo and hardwood products. Berkshire’s Richline Buys Jeweler Started by Stay-at-Home Moms

Richline Group Inc., a jewelry manufacturer and marketer owned by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc., agreed to buy designs, a brand name and inventory from Silpada Designs as part of a push into sterling-silver products.

Silpada was started by stay-at-home moms and grew into “the world’s largest home party seller of sterling silver jewelry,” Richline said Friday in a statement. Terms weren’t disclosed. [...]

Buffett-Backed Insurer Keeps Getting Sued Over Complex Products

Miller’s nonprofit is one of dozens of employers -- from a bike-courier service in Manhattan to a linen-supply company in Sacramento -- that have sued Applied for deceptive practices. The businesses allege the insurer peddled products regulators hadn’t approved. They complain about being surprised by large bills based on formulas that stacked the deck in the insurer’s favor. California, Vermont and Wisconsin have banned some Applied plans. [...]

As courts weigh these quarrels, this much is clear: It’s a lot of hot water for one of Buffett’s companies. The billionaire, who didn’t respond to requests for comment, tells Berkshire managers that “there’s plenty of money to be made in the center of the court.” In other words, no need to get close to the line, legally or ethically, to make some extra bucks. [...]

Warren Buffett Loves This Business—Maybe a Little Too Much

Warren Buffett watchers know that the reinsurance business has been an important ingredient in his winning formula. Companies like his Berkshire Hathaway sell coverage to other insurance companies for natural disasters and other big events. In return, the reinsurance sellers collect lots of premiums, which they can invest while waiting to pay claims. Buffett has credited this “float” with helping to build one of the world’s great fortunes.

But the business isn’t what it used be. Buffett sold stakes in the world’s two largest reinsurers—Swiss Re and Munich Re—last year, saying their prospects look worse in the next decade than they did in the last. And he put a new leadership team in at Berkshire’s own Gen Re unit to try to reverse more than a decade of shrinking float. [...]

Here's How Long it Takes Warren Buffett to Decide on a Billion-Dollar Deal

When asked by Rubenstein if he receives calls from people every day, hoping to pitch him the “perfect” deal, Buffett said his phone rings less than expected because Berkshire has a clear-cut criteria.

“When somebody calls, I can usually tell within two or three minutes whether a deal is likely to happen or not,” Buffett told Rubenstein. “There’s just half-a-dozen filters,” he said, gesturing toward his head. “And it either makes through the filters or not.” [...]

In 1969 he sold the Sun to Berkshire Hathaway Inc., headed by Buffett, beginning a nearly 50-year relationship between the two men.

Mars Cashes Out Warren Buffett to Take Control of Wrigley

Mars Inc. has finally taken full control of Wrigley, formally putting M&Ms and Altoids mints in the same division — and cashing out its partner, Warren E. Buffett, in the process. [...]

Berkshire Hathaway helped Mars buy Wrigley for about $23 billion in 2008. It was a classic deal for the billionaire, who has traditionally favored acquisitions involving well-known names and strongly performing businesses.

But there was a lucrative element in the way Mr. Buffett participated in the transaction. As part of the arrangement, Berkshire received preferred shares worth about $2.1 billion, which paid a 5 percent annual dividend, and $4.4 billion worth of bonds that carried a hefty 11.45 percent interest rate. [...]

Berkshire Is Bigger Than Buffett

We think two big concerns--a belief that Berkshire Hathaway's size will prevent it from growing at a decent clip in the future and that the company's shares will get pummeled once Buffett no longer runs the show--have kept some investors on the sidelines. Although we believe that the wide-moat firm is unlikely to consistently grow its book value per share at a double-digit rate, something that happened nine times during 2001-15 and 40 times during 1965-2015, we think that Berkshire can grow its book value per share at a high-single- to double-digit rate going forward, much as we've seen since the start of the new millennium. This type of growth should leave returns solidly and consistently above the firm's cost of capital [...]

Cash is piling up faster than Warren Buffett can invest it

Warren Buffett has the kind of money problem most people would envy: a growing mountain of cash.

Nearly $73 billion piled up at Berkshire Hathaway by mid-summer, more than Buffett’s conglomerate has ever held before.

And the total continues growing every day Buffett doesn’t make a major investment because Berkshire’s 90-odd businesses generate roughly $1.5 billion in cash every month. [...]

Berkshire Hathaway Eyes Growth Despite Cat Loss Concerns

Berkshire Hathaway’s non-insurance businesses like utilities and & energy, and manufacturing, service & retail, have been reporting favorable results. In fact, total revenue from manufacturing, service and retail has improved substantially over the past several quarters. The strong results across most of the units can be attributed to better economic conditions and higher consumer demand.

Also, the company’s book value has been improving consistently. The insurer’s already robust book value growth is expected to be boosted further with the turn of the economy, increased gains from the value of the derivatives positions, and continued positive contribution from earnings growth in insurance operations. Berkshire can't resist India any more, to return with reinsurance business

Berkshire Hathaway Sees Power Market as Electrons' Match.com (Bloomberg)

Berkshire Hathaway Inc.’s energy unit has been courting three dozen power transmission operators in the western U.S. to join its utilities and the California grid in trading power across their borders electronically and instantaneously. This means traders wouldn’t need to pick up the phone or send e-mails each hour to schedule the purchase and sale of renewables while hoping the sun and wind hold out until the next hour.

This so-called Energy Imbalance Market is the equivalent of creating a “Match.com for electrons,” Jonathan Weisgall, vice president of government relations at Berkshire Hathaway Energy, said [...]

BNSF Pressures Congress to Extend 2015 Rail Safety Deadline (Bloomberg)

BNSF Railway Co., the railroad owned by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc., is ratcheting up pressure on Congress to postpone a deadline for installing a safety system by the end of the year, saying it would probably have to halt freight and passenger traffic if the requirement isn’t delayed.

Congress mandated in 2008 that U.S. railroads install what’s known as positive train control, which can automatically stop a train to avoid a collision, by the end of 2015. But the major railroads have said they’re still years away from fully implementing it. Safety regulations trump BNSF’s obligation as a common carrier to haul freight for customers, BNSF said in a letter sent to Senate commerce committee chairman Wednesday. [...]

NetJets Pilots Ask for Better Pay for Flying Millionaires (Vanity Fair)

[...] At six other airports—Columbus, Dallas, Scottsdale, Seattle-Tacoma, Van Nuys, and Palm Beach International—700 of their colleagues did the same. The pilots, who all work for the fractional jet-ownership company, picketed as part of a more than two-year-long labor dispute. The roughly 3,000 pilots who fly for the company have been working without a contract since 2013. Their union, the NetJets Association of Shared Aircraft Pilots, and NetJets blew past their self-imposed September 3 deadline for a tentative agreement.

The bristle, of course, has been over pay and benefits. The pilots’ union said salaries are not high enough and the company’s proposed changes to benefits would put them on the hook for more health-care costs. NetJets said in a statement that on economic issues, the two sides are still a long way apart. [...]

The trend of buyers rationalising their reinsurance programmes—using fewer, bigger players with a broader reach—has benefited Berkshire Hathaway, Manfred Seitz, managing director of international reinsurance at Berkshire Hathaway, told Monte Carlo Today.

Shaw Industries to invest $45 million, create 50 jobs at S.C. plant (Dalton Daily Citizen)

Fiber made from that recycled plastic is used in Shaw’s ClearTouch residential carpet products. This keeps a significant volume of waste out of the landfill and saves 1.9 trillion BTUs of energy each year, enough energy to power more than 51,000 U.S. homes a year [...]

GEICO van and gecko, from GEICO's Flickr stream

This week, 90% of the news I saw about Berkshire Hathaway fit into three categories:

  1. Slower news outlets and blogs covering last week's announced purchase of Precision Castparts.
  2. The stock market dip earlier this week caused Warren Buffett to lose a lot of money.
  3. Comparisons between Berkshire Hathaway and Google... errr... Alphabet.
But there were a few interesting other news bits:

Geico, the auto insurance unit of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc, agreed to pay $6 million to settle charges it discriminated based on gender, education level and occupation when quoting rates online, the California Department of Insurance said on Monday.

The settlement lasts three years and resolves claims first raised by the Consumer Federation of California against Geico, which insures more than 22 million vehicles.

Geico was accused of targeting women, people with low incomes and people not working in professional or executive jobs with deceptive and inflated rate quotations, while offering better terms to drivers it considered more desirable. [...]

DQ Bakes is Dairy Queen's largest-ever menu expansion (Minneapolis Star Tribune)

Look for a raft of Dairy Queen TV ads next month for the Turkey BLT, Triple Chocolate Brownie a la Mode and more items from the new DQ Bakes menu.

Dairy Queen says it’s the restaurant chain’s largest-ever menu boost, aimed at bolstering its appeal as a food destination, while fortifying its stronghold in sweet treats.

Dairy Queen’s franchisees nationwide are installing oven systems — a big investment — to make DQ Bakes. And the Edina-based chain is for the first time doing year-round advertising to burnish a brand that turned 75 this year. [...]

While Berkshire is publicly traded, it doesn’t include Dairy Queen’s results in its financial reports. Gainor said that Dairy Queen’s stores together do $4.1 billion in annual sales. The company’s massively popular Blizzard makes up about 36 percent of that tally.

The chain’s same-store sales growth, a key restaurant financial gauge, has been in the high single digits in the past year or so, and in the mid-single digits on average since the 2009 recession, Gainor said. [...]

Shaw Industries Group Inc. plans to spend tens of millions of dollars at a South Carolina carpet fiber plant to increase the use of fiber from recycled plastics.

S&P: Reinsurance M&A Will Be Driven by Berkshire Hathaway Model (Insurance Journal)

“We have seen an increased interest by investors to emulate the Berkshire Hathaway Inc. business model,” S&P said in its report. “Through their investment holding companies, they are acquiring [insurer/reinsurers] with strong operating cash flows that will be upstreamed to the parent company. This buy now and pay later [insurance/reinsurance] model generates cash flows, or “float” that these [Berkshire Hathaway] copycats invest.” [...]

The Berkshire Hathaway “business model is hard to duplicate and it is becoming a crowded trade in an already saturated reinsurance market,” the ratings agency said. “We expect more similar deals to come to the market during the next 12 months, which will likely continue to put pressure on reinsurance pricing given these holding companies’ lower cost of capital relative to stand-alone, publicly traded reinsurers.”

Burger King peace offer to McDonald's: 'Let's make a McWhopper' (Business Insider)

In the name of global peace, Burger King proposed making the hybrid hamburger to its rival McDonald's on Wednesday, at least for one day, the United Nations-promoted International Day of Peace on Sept. 21.

Burger King, perpetually locked in tough competition with the larger but less profitable McDonald's, delivered the olive branch via a full-page advertisement in The New York Times, saying it is time to "call a ceasefire on these so-called burger wars." [...]

Behind the scene in the campaign is some of the financial power of Burger King's part-owner, Berkshire Hathaway head Warren Buffett.

Peace One Day is strongly backed by the charitable foundation of the tycoon's son Howard Buffett, who is a director of Berkshire Hathaway and possible successor to his father as chairman.

Renewable Energy In U.S. Heartland: How States Make It Work (Clean Technica)

Traditional investor-owned electric utilities rely on a guaranteed return on equity set by electricity regulators. Utilities typically earn this return by investing in generation systems such as coal and gas power plants or solar and wind farms (assets) and selling electricity to recover their investment, plus a return. In Iowa, MidAmerican has gone beyond this model to lower retail costs by selling their excess wind power to the local regional transmission organization. This let them increase the total amount of wind power on the grid and balance overall power generation. This has been so effective that MidAmerican plans to invest another $900 million in wind energy in Iowa, bringing the company’s total wind investment to $6.7 billion. The western Energy Imbalance Market, in turn, may let other Berkshire Hathaway Energy subsidiaries replicate this success. [...]

Berkshire Hathaway 1Q15 Earnings

10-Q Quarterly Report

Company Press Release (a brief summary)

Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Reports a Solid 20% Increase in Operating Income in the First Quarter (Fool)

Ahead of its annual shareholders meeting over the weekend, Berkshire Hathaway reported first-quarter results for 2015. Operating earnings, which exclude the impact of gains or losses in its equity and derivatives contracts, jumped by 20%, to $4.24 billion, up from $3.53 billion in the first quarter of 2014. Net income also jumped 9.7%, to $5.16 billion, or $3,143 per Class A share.

Investment results were less than spectacular, largely the result of losses from its outsize public stock portfolio. The company reported losing $1.02 billion from its equity portfolio. [...]

Berkshire Profit Climbs 9.8% on Burger King, Railroad Gain (Bloomberg)

Berkshire’s biggest unit, the BNSF railroad, contributed $1.05 billion to quarterly earnings, compared with $724 million a year earlier. The railroad said last week that it won back market share for grain and agriculture commodities that it lost to Union Pacific Corp. in 2014. [...]

The manufacturing, service and retail segment, which includes toolmaker Iscar and chemical company Lubrizol, added $1.12 billion to earnings, compared with $933 million a year earlier. Profit climbed 59 percent to $230 million at the segment selling building products as the Shaw carpet business and Johns Manville insulation provider benefited from higher sales and lower costs for energy and raw materials.

Profit at the utility unit, Berkshire Hathaway Energy, fell to $421 million from $452 million a year earlier as milder weather limited demand. The business operates natural-gas pipelines that stretch from the Great Lakes to Texas and power companies in states including Iowa and Nevada. [...]

Berkshire Starts 2015 on a More Solid Note (Morningstar)

Book value per Class A equivalent share at the end of the first quarter was $146,963--up 6% year over year and basically flat when compared with the fourth quarter of 2014. This was lower than our forecast, which had book value per share increasing to $149,841 at the end of the first quarter. The company closed out the first quarter of 2015 with $63.7 billion in cash on its books, up marginally from $63.3 billion at the end of last year, even though the firm spent $4.1 billion to close out the Van Tuyl deal in early March. Berkshire did not buy back any shares during the first quarter of 2015.

Looking more closely at Berkshire's insurance operations, only two of the firm's four insurance lines--Geico and Berkshire Hathaway Primary Group--posted earned premium growth during the quarter, with General Re and Berkshire Hathaway Reinsurance Group reporting another quarterly decline. [...]

BNSF tracks at Dewey, South Dakota

Berkshire Hathaway Inc BNSF Retakes Agricultural Transport Market Share From Union Pacific Corporation (Bidness Etc)

Berkshire Hathaway Inc.-owned Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp (BNSF) railway reported yesterday that it has taken back its market share of grain and agricultural goods. The company lost its share last year as it failed to meet the customer demand and because its competitor, Union Pacific Corporation, had taken the market share lost by BNSF, and has been providing services since then. [...]

Union Pacific managed to increase its carload by 6.7% during last year, benefiting from the market share loss of BNSF. As BNSF is increasing its market share in agricultural goods, Union Pacific will ultimately lose some of its cargo load and market share. BNSF managed to increase its grain carload by 27% in the first quarter of the current year, hitting Union Pacific carload, which declined 3%. BNSF aims at further increasing its market share of agricultural product cargo, which contributed to 19% of the company’s total revenues last year.

Berkshire insurance unit has unique birthday celebrations (Boston Globe)

Most financial companies don’t celebrate their birthday with a slide show and a song written for the occasion. But Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance isn’t a typical financial company.

The company already employs more than 550 people, including nearly 75 at its downtown Boston headquarters, even though the Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary will be only two years old on April 29. It’s aiming to exceed $1 billion in premiums this year. [...]

In addition, members will be able to purchase pre-packaged offers from Angie’s List’s online marketplace that include Shaw flooring and installation.

3 Ways Berkshire Hathaway Will Look Different 10 Years From Now (Fool)

Berkshire Hathaway is Mr. Buffett's life work and he has directly contributed an incalculable amount of value to the firm through his capital allocation choices. However, his retirement or death wouldn't be catastrophic -- contrary to what some investors appear to believe. As one should reasonably expect, given the care and effort with which he has built Berkshire, Buffett has been equally deliberate in putting in place the people and the structures necessary to ensure that the business will continue to thrive without him.

Berkshire Challenges Lawuit Over Benefits at Brick Unit (Bloomberg)
Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (BRK/A) didn’t break promises on retirement benefits to employees of a brick-making business it acquired in 2000, the company said in a challenge to a lawsuit filed last month. [...] The plaintiffs have misinterpreted the agreement to acquire Fort Worth-based Acme, Berkshire said today in a statement. The plaintiffs mistakenly contend that the acquisition “required Acme to permit participants to accrue additional defined benefits forever, at the same rate that benefits were being accrued at the time of the acquisition,” Berkshire said today. The plaintiffs also contend the acquisition required “additional 401k matches forever,” at the same rate as the matches in 2000, Berkshire said.

Railroad union rejects contract with BNSF that would have allowed one-person crews (Minneapolis Star Tribune)

A railroad union has rejected a deal with BNSF that would have allowed one-person crews on as much as 60 percent of its tracks. [...] The deal would have allowed BNSF to use one-person crews on tracks where a system capable of stopping the train remotely had been installed. But trains that carry hazardous materials, such as crude oil and chemicals, would have continued to have two-person crews. BNSF operates tracks in 28 states in the western U.S. and two Canadian provinces. The railroad, based in Fort Worth, Texas, said it has Positive Train Control systems installed on about 60 percent of its 32,500 miles of track.

Dairy Queen still light on details of data breach (Minneapolis Star Tribune)

A week after crooks hacked into its customers’ financial data, Dairy Queen still hasn’t released specifics on the breach. Still, the Edina-based company said in a statement Thursday it has “determined that only a small portion of our 4,500 U.S. stores are potential victims of the criminal activity. The stores are not geographically clustered and each has a mitigation plan.” [...] Dairy Queen’s efforts to track the hack may be complicated by its business structure. Almost all of its stores are owned by franchisees, so there could be a multiplicity of information technology systems. Dairy Queen has 3,000 franchisees in the United States, many operating just a handful of stores. Of course, such a decentralized system like Dairy Queen’s may also have impeded a wider hack. [...] Dairy Queen was stricken with “Backoff” malware, and last week the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said that more than 1,000 retailers could have been hit by it. Backoff is believed to be behind a hack announced in mid-August by Eden Prairie-based Supervalu, which affected just over 1,000 grocery and liquor stores; and the massive attack on Target during the 2013 holiday season, which exposed the financial data of 70 million customers.

Shaw files ‘epic’ suit against flooring rival Carlisle (Atlanta Constitution-Journal)

Shaw Industries Group, the Dalton-based carpet and flooring producer, is suing a competitor for trademark infringement and deceptive trade practices over the use of the word ‘epic’. In a lawsuit filed recently in federal court in Atlanta, Shaw claims Carlisle Wide Plank Floors refuses to drop the word “epic” from its marketing, a “mark” that Shaw said it has had exclusive rights to use since 2006. Carlisle, based in Stoddard, NH., calls itself “the epic wide plank floor company.” In marketing material, the company says it produces the widest, longest center-cut plank floors available in the world and that its product is “truly epic.” [...] Shaw said it licenses the use of “EPIC”, which the manufacturer uses as a reference for “engineered wood flooring”, from Omaha-based Columbia Insurance Co., which owns the mark. Both companies are subsidiaries of billionaire Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway investment firm.

Buffett Called Hatch to Gauge U.S. Tax Inversion Policy (Bloomberg)

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett called U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch to gauge Congress’s direction on curbing tax inversions, the senator said today. Buffett, chairman and chief executive officer of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., is helping finance Burger King Worldwide Inc.’s purchase of Tim Hortons Inc. and its move to Canada. That transaction could be affected by legislative and regulatory changes being considered in Washington. [...] The call happened before Burger King “reached final agreement” on the deal and “consequently well before it was announced” on Aug. 26, Debbie Bosanek, Buffett’s assistant at Omaha, Nebraska-based Berkshire, wrote in an e-mail today. [...] Charles Munger, Berkshire’s 90-year-old vice chairman, said yesterday that Berkshire will pay the U.S. government more because of its $3 billion investment in the deal. “Anyone who thinks this is a great tragedy and a great injustice is stark raving mad,” Munger said regarding the fact that the new company will be based in Canada. “It’s a non-event.”

The 1 Peculiar Trait Shared by Warren Buffett's Energy Investments (Fool)

Since the beginning of last year, Berkshire has made two major additions to his portfolio in the energy industry -- ExxonMobil and Suncor Energy -- and has also added significantly to his position in one other -- National Oilwell Varco. On the surface, they look like pretty different companies. You have the largest integrated oil and gas company, a specialist in the Canadian oil sands business, and an oil and gas equipment and services supplier that has a corner on building drill rigs and related equipment. [...] It all comes down to generating fat stacks of cash from continuing operations. It's not just that these companies are really good at generating free cash flow from continuing operations, it's that they are the best at it in their respective realms.
Colahan to leave RSA for Berkshire Hathaway in Australia (Post Online)

The names and resumes of the people involved here aren't as important as the bigger story between the lines that Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance is expanding to Asia and Australia.

Post understands Chris Colahan, CEO RSA Asia, is leaving the company to oversee a new operation for Berkshire Hathaway in Australia. [...] Post understands Colahan will help set-up Berkshire Hathaway Specialty in Australia and New Zealand, while Marc Breuil, formerly head of AIG Hong Kong, has been tasked with heading up its Asia operations. Berkshire Hathaway has also recruited Marcus Portbury AIG's regional casualty head for Asia-Pacific. [...] Buffett has reportedly authorised Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance to apply for licenses in Sydney, Europe, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Ex-Bengal Ickey Woods does 'Ickey Shuffle' in Geico ad, internet loves it (CBS Sports)

Former Bengals running back Ickey Woods only played in 37 games during his brief NFL career, but that was long enough for him to give us the 'Ickey Shuffle.' Woods would do the shuffle after every touchdown he scored, which meant 15 shuffles in 1988. The shuffle was everywhere in 1988 because the Bengals made it all the way to the Super Bowl. Thanks to Geico, the shuffle is now back.

The World's Most Respected Companies (Barron's)
Apple is back on top. Last year, Berkshire Hathaway knocked Apple out of the No. 1 spot in Barron's annual ranking of the world's most respected companies. But the iEverything maker has reclaimed the throne with a flourish in 2014, its winning score leaving No. 2 Berkshire and others a blur in the rearview mirror. [...] Although Berkshire slipped one rung this year, Warren Buffett's investment conglomerate is no slouch, either. It has finished out of the top five just once in the past nine years -- in 2012. That's a strong endorsement of Buffett's tenure and a reflection of the esteem he has earned in his storied career.

The 1 Person Who Should Replace Warren Buffett (Fool)

As much as long-term shareholders would like him to, Warren Buffett isn't going to be atop Berkshire Hathaway forever. The topic of Buffett's potential successor is nothing new, but who are these potential heirs and what could they mean for Berkshire Hathaway shareholders who aim to hold their position for decades to come. To get a better idea of this talent pool, we asked five Berkshire-loving Fools who they would like to see step into Warren's shoes after he's gone.

Buffett Unit Closes Second Deal This Month for Utah Solar Power (Bloomberg Businessweek)

A utility owned by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. has closed its second deal this month to buy solar power from renewable-energy developer First Wind Holdings Inc. Rocky Mountain Power, a unit of PacifiCorp, will buy 320 megawatts under 20-year contracts, First Wind said today in a statement. Four 80-megawatt solar farms in Utah’s Beaver and Iron counties will supply power to PacifiCorp, a Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary. Construction on the Four Brothers solar development is expected to begin next year and be finished by 2016. The project will produce enough energy to power about 64,000 homes.

California, Buffett’s PacifiCorp Approved for Western Market (Bloomberg)

Warren Buffett’s PacifiCorp power utility and the California Independent System Operator Corp., which manages the grid in a state that consumes more electricity than all of Mexico, won approval to start a regional market. [...] The system, slated to become the only real-time, regional one of its kind in the western U.S., will be capable of automatically dispatching power every five minutes from plants with a combined capacity of 68,846 megawatts, enough to supply 51.6 million homes. The ISO and PacifiCorp have hailed it as the first step toward an organized market stretching across the entire Western Interconnection, where 38 authorities from Canada to Mexico now manage fluctuations on their own grids.

Fired Worker Finds Paint Names Offensive (Courthouse News Service)

A black worker named Clinton Tucker claims in court that Benjamin Moore paints fired him after his repeated complaints about their "despicable and racially insulting paint colors called 'Clinton Brown' and 'Tucker Chocolate.'" Tucker sued the paint giant in Essex County Court. [...] Tucker says that after this exchange, a colleague asked, "If you think that is bad, what about Confederate Red?" which Tucker says is a color of paint that is "offensively described by Benjamin [Moore] as a 'timeless and enduring classic.'"

The Biggest Threat to Warren Buffett's Empire (Fool)

Earlier this year, we learned regulators had begun to look at Berkshire Hathaway -- and its nearly half a trillion dollars in assets -- to determine whether or not it should be deemed a "Systematically Important Financial Institution," or SIFI. If the Financial Stability Oversight Council determines Berkshire Hathaway is a SIFI -- meaning its failure could threaten the broader stability of the markets -- it could be a devastating blow to Buffett's company. This designation would result in new regulatory scrutiny and oversight. It would become regulated by the Federal Reserve and as the consultancy Deloitte notes, "Nonbank SIFIs must comply with the Board of Governors' capital plan rule and develop annual capital plans, conduct capital adequacy stress tests, and maintain adequate capital."
How Berkshire Hathaway's GEICO Crushes Allstate and Progressive (Fool)

Still trailing State Farm though, if you're keeping score at home...

For the full year in 2013, we learned that GEICO supplanted Allstate to claim the title of being the second-largest auto insurer in the United States. The business at Berkshire Hathaway saw its auto insurance premiums rise by 11.3%, to $18.6 billion, while Allstate only saw its rise by 3.4%, to $18.1 billion. The growth of Progressive and market leader State Farm was better than Allstate, but none of the big four in insurance saw the gains posted by GEICO [...]

The sale, announced in March, is part of a complicated stock swap between the two companies.

As an addition to Shaw's portfolio of recycling solutions, Evergreen Ringgold will give the company a flexible recycling solution that is capable of recycling nylon and polyester carpet.

Berkshire Hathaway Energy announced on May 1 that it intends to purchase AltaLink — Alberta’s largest electricity transmission company — from current owner SNC-Lavalin of Montreal. The deal is expected to close Dec. 31. [...] Some individuals said they oppose the sale because Berkshire Hathaway Energy is American-owned.

Buffett warning unheeded as catastrophe bond sales climb (BusinessDay)

Bond buyers are betting more than ever on the mercy of Mother Nature as they seek to boost yields being suppressed by central banks. Demand for notes linked to insurance against hurricanes and other natural disasters is prompting investors to accept the lowest relative yields in almost a decade for this time of the year, when the Atlantic storm season gets underway. Buyers are speculating that the $22 billion market can continue its streak without an annual loss even as Warren Buffet said last week that Berkshire Hathaway Inc. is avoiding writing hurricane insurance in Florida because premiums have been pushed too low.

Berkshire Seen Reporting Record Profit as U.S. Rebounds (Bloomberg) http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-02-27/berkshire-seen-repo...

If you're reading this after Saturday, note that this was a pre-earnings prediction...

Berkshire Hathaway Inc. will probably post record full-year profit showing how Chairman Warren Buffett’s five decades of acquisitions positioned his company to benefit from a rebounding U.S. economy. Net income was at least $18 billion in 2013, according to analysts at Nomura Holdings Inc. and Keefe Bruyette & Woods. That compares with $14.8 billion in 2012, the previous record. Omaha, Nebraska-based Berkshire said it will release its annual report March 1 at about 8 a.m. New York time.

Warren Buffett Just Bought Another Million Shares of This Company (Fool)

Twelve months ago, Berkshire held zero shares of Exxonmobil. Phillips 66 and ConocoPhillips -- at about $1.4 billion each -- were Berkshire's largest energy holdings. After last year's spending spree, ExxonMobil now stands as Berkshires sixth-largest stock position, in a statistical tie with long-held Procter and Gamble as 4% of Berkshire's stock portfolio. During the same period, Buffett largely sold out of ConocoPhillips, with Berkshire now holding 11 million shares versus more than 80 million held in 2008. Most of the remaining stake in Phillips 66 -- largely received when the company was spun out of ConocoPhillips in 2012 -- will also disappear from Berkshire's portfolio this year, when they're traded back to Phillips 66 in exchange for the company's flow enhancer business.

BNSF to move into tank car ownership with safer oil fleet (Reuters)

BNSF Railway Co plans to move into tank car ownership and buy its own fleet of up to 5,000 new crude oil tank cars with safety features that exceed the latest industry standards, the unit of investor Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. said on Thursday. The unusual step by one of the largest U.S. railroads aims to reduce the risks of moving crude by rail after several recent accidents, including one involving a BNSF train in North Dakota in December.

Berkshire Investors Lacking Data Take Buffett on Faith (Bloomberg)

For years, chemical maker Lubrizol filed annual reports with securities regulators that ran 80 pages or more, detailing everything from its inventory to pension obligations. Today, investors would have to do math to figure out the company’s earnings in public filings. The difference is that Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. bought Lubrizol in 2011 for about $9 billion and now lumps together the results with those of several other manufacturing businesses. [...] The disclosure is “sufficient for his shareholder base at the moment,” said Jeff Matthews, a Berkshire investor and author of books about the company. “Once he’s gone, people are going to say, ‘What’s here?
